When I got my copy of “I’m Judging You” I nearly squealed with delight. For at least 8 years, Luvvie and I have been virtual BFF’s in my head. And now she’d sent me a copy of her debut book. Money. I don’t remember the exact date that Luvvie and I met on these interwebs but it was during the time when I had the site Rants of A Wild Child. I’ll give you a brief history of my blogging life prior to that of The Crunchy Mommy: I started blogging on MySpace and had fun. Once that site went kaput, I started Rants of A Wild Child where I would basically blog about the foolishness that I saw every day. I eventually invited another blogger onto my site and we would write together having a blast. We split. I got divorced then laid off and pregnant. When I moved in with my mom I started the Mommy Memoirs and even managed to live tweet my labor. It was epic. After I had abc, I started this site. And now we’re here.

But in between blogging on MySpace and Rants of A Wild Child, I “met” Luvvie and we’ve been virtual buddies ever since!

You know how they say that real G’s move in silence? Well, that’s exactly what Luvvie has done with her career. I remember seeing some posts about having some things in the works and then some things about a book and then BAM! Next thing I know I see photos of Luvvie and the Judgey Pop hanging out with folks at the White House, awards ceremonies and now, my house. I could not WAIT to get my hands on this book and read until my eyes were filled with tears from laughter. I may or may not have gotten whip lash from all the nodding that I’ve done as I read this book.

I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual

Not that she needs my seal of approval after getting it from the likes of Shonda Rhimes and Ava DuVerney, but she got it.

In “I’m Judging You”, Luvvie addresses everything from life, current culture, social media, and fame. Honestly speaking, when I got the book, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Luvvie is a hilarious writer who is well known for covering pop culture. But I knew her as being a person who is passionate about sexual health, one of the co-founders of the Red Pump Project and as someone who fights for the justice of her people.

Introduction

I sat in my bed reading the introduction and tears were spilling out of my eyes. I don’t mean this in the dramatic sense. I’m very literal when I say this. My husband sat and watched me read trying to stifle from giving my full out laugh as to not wake the sleeping monsters in awe. He couldn’t believe that something could be this funny until I read him an excerpt and we both belly laughed together. Who knew that Luvvie would be out here fostering the growth of strong marriages!?

Life

I consistently tell my kids to “get your life right” and this section does just that. Luvvie isn’t a mother yet she had me hollering over her very relatable experience with her niece. Her description of toddlers as being little terrorists is so accurate and hit home for me as I’m raising abc trying to maintain my sanity. As I read through “When Baehood Goes Bad” I wanted to copy and paste every word for the world to see because lessons man. Lessons. But what warmed my heart the most was the chapter “Weight A Minute”. As someone who is incredibly self-conscious about her size, this literally moved me to tears.

I could probably go on giving recap after recap but I won’t because I want you to read it. Luvvie Ajayi is a brilliant comedian that has the ability to make simple sense of the most complex things. Reading her blog is one thing but this book is something else. Luvvie’s execution of the book, her ability to build a community aka LuvvNation, and her branding is truly flawless. She is a force to be reckoned with! But you know what? Through it all she’s maintained humility, transparency, and is always willing to help another get to where she is. Even if I didn’t know her personally I would be equally proud of this woman’s accomplishments.
