I have a confession to make: I love fall TV. I know, as a working wife and mom of 2 who has very little time how can I feed my addiction, right? Well, where thereās a will, thereās a way and one of the new TV shows Iāve added to my must-watch list is āTimelessā. Iām not a fan of history so I didnāt expect to love this show but I do.
New Fall TV Show: Timeless
āTimelessā takes place in the current year but through a Mr. Peabody-esque time machine, they are able to travel back in time to historic events. Without giving any spoilers, hereās a brief synopsis from the NBC website:
When a mysterious criminal steals a secret state-of-the-art time machine, planning to use it to change the past events to destroy America in the present, the only hope is a team of unexpected heroes composed of a scientist, a soldier, and a history professor. The trio must use the stolen machineās prototype to journey back in time to critical events, being careful not to affect history themselves, while working to stay one step ahead of the villain who would unravel the timeline and understand the mystery driving his mission before itās too late.
Sounds good, right?
Well it is. Like I mentioned, Iām not for history. Itās really boring to me and certainly wasnāt my favorite subject throughout any of my academic years but I love this show. Why, right? Reading about history and what historians want us to know isnāt fun. There are so many pieces that are left out. But to watch it and have it be exciting and interesting is something totally differentāthis is what āTimelessā offers.
The Cast
The cast has great chemistry and is a good mix of both well-known with up-and-coming actors.
Lucy Preston: Sheās the historian played by Abigail Spencer.
Matt Lanter: Heās the muscle played Wyatt Logan.
Rufus Carlin: Heās the scientist played by Malcolm Barrett
Garcia Flynn: Heās the villain played by Goran Visnjic
Denise Christopher: Sheās the Homeland Security head honcho that recruited the team played by Sakina Jaffery.
Connor Mason: Heās the CEO of the company that created the time machine that was stolen and heās played by Paterson Joseph.
Interview with Abigail Spencer
I was pretty excited to interview fellow working mom Abigail Spencer. Sheās a mom of an 8 year old son named Roman. I’ve not done many (if any) interviews before and I have to admit that I was a little nervous–I mean, I’m chatting with a star! But as soon as she got on the line, all my nerves dissipated as her bubbly personality made it feel like we were talking to an old friend.
When given the opportunity to ask a question, I asked “What is one event from history that you would change?” Her answer was really relatable:
I would change Eve eating the apple and the way the country was founded since we’re still feeling the repercussions.
Given the current state of affairs, I totally agree with her on this. Spencer is a devoted mom who flies back to LA every weekend to be with her son. I loved how she answered another interviewers question when they asked how she balances motherhood with work. Her answer was something that I think all working moms can benefit from:
I include him in my work and invite him into the process. He’s been on every set and knows the people that I’m working with. But it truly takes a village.
It was really cool to just chat with Spencer and hear that she’s a normal mom balancing a pretty unique role in an up and coming TV show.
Timeless: My Thoughts
As I mentioned before, I’m not your history lover or buff. I remember the important things about US history–I’m definitely better with the history of my people though. I loved how there was no warm up period for the show. It jumps right into the action so you know by the end of the first episode if this for you. The characters are a good mix and have great chemistry. I love that the show doesn’t completely shy away from some of the hard to swallow truths of our present and history–namely that of being Black in America.
There are a lot of comments made by Rufus in the show that I’d love for them to elaborate on. He’s the Black scientist being sent back in time. In the episode airing tonight, October 10 at 10pm EST, the characters are faced with a hard decision that could ultimately change the present for the better–or worse. In the first episode we saw how one change in history with the Hindenburg drastically changed Lucy’s life and I’m interested to see how things continue to unfold.
Tune in every Monday night at 10pm to NBC to keep up where Lucy, Matt and Rufus go and how changes in the past affect their present!
