Can you believe that Halloween is THIS WEEK?!!? My kids still haven’t confirmed with me what each of them wants to be since they love waiting until the day of to let me know. I’m an avid online shopper and we always have a few Amazon smile boxes laying around, it only seems right to make use of them to make an easy and unique last-minute Halloween costume (also known as a boxtume) for at least one of my kids! So what do you do when you have some Amazon smile boxes, paint and favorite books?

You turn your kid into a life-sized diorama!!

My kids weren’t as excited about this as I was initially but when I was in school, making dioramas was one of my favorite activities. I have always been an avid reader and my kids are book lovers too, so it’s a perfect match!

Pout-Pout Fish Diorama Halloween Boxstume

One of the books that has been a favorite of all of my children has been The Pout-Pout Fish. We have the original book as well as The Pout-Pout Fish Goes To School and some others–they even have a Halloween edition! Normally dioramas are made with shoeboxes but the Amazon smile boxes work perfectly for our life-sized version. In fact, Amazon Prime encouraging crafters (or not so crafty people) to use Amazon smile boxes plus some things around the house to create costumes! You guys know that I love this because it encourages people to REUSE something that’s already in their homes. So how did we make this life-sized diorama?

Amazon Boxtume Diorama Tutorial:

  • Tape
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Book
  • Knife
  • Face paint
  • Kid

Instructions:

  • Decide on what page you plan on replicating. We chose a simple page that was pretty basic.
  • Tape up the back of the box.

  • Cut a hole for where the neck will be.
  • Paint your child’s face the color of the fish/character they’ll be.
  • Put the Boxtume on and let them run wild!

The Diorama Boxtume is really unique and my kids are already fighting over who will get to wear the costume! The best part is that any of them can fit it! I love being able to create something unique for my kids to wear–my dad made me an asthma inhaler for Halloween one year and it’s still my favorite costume!

So what are your kids going to be this year? Did you plan it out or will it be a last-minute Halloween costume?
