I’ve partnered with Dollar General to bring this information that I thought you would find useful. For more information on how this works, please visit my PR & Disclosure page.
School starts in just a few short weeks and in truth, I don’t know who is happier about this–me or the kids. Sure, we rocked out with homeschooling and that worked for us until it didn’t. Now all three–yes, BC is being booted as well–are heading back to school and Dollar General is making getting prepared super easy. Want to be able to shop for school, classroom and lunch supplies in one area without breaking the bank? Same.
My Back To School Dollar General Haul
One of the things that I really love about Dollar General and shopping there is that I get a great bang for my buck. I can go in with $40 and come out with some rather high-quality items. As someone who works really hard to stick to a budget, this matters big time.
School Supplies
They had all of the basics that we needed from highlighters to crayons and notebooks. We got all of that from there! They even had the fancy scented crayons that I may (or may not) have gotten for myself. Crayola is readily available for everyone there!
Classroom Supplies
I want to minimize the number of germs my kids inevitably come home with so I don’t have a problem dropping off cleaning supplies! Dollar General has their DG|Home line and their prices are super affordable so stocking up is something that won’t empty my accounts.
Lunch Box Goodies
Did you know that you can get super cute and functional lunch box pieces from Dollar General? I know!
I grabbed this bright rainbow unicorn lunch box that’s large enough to store their lunches plus extra snacks to have throughout the day. There was a great selection of small food storage options that will make keeping the variety of foods packed nice and neat. I love to use smaller sized storage for things like yogurt and applesauce. It’s more environmentally & budget-friendly to buy the larger container of applesauce or yogurt and divvy them up.
Because my kids will be in nut-free environments, there will be no peanut butter and jelly sandwiches–a household favorite. These kids LOVE a roll-up with turkey, cheese, and hummus though! This is such an easy, delicious and nutritious lunch option for them. To make, just grab tortillas, cheese, and turkey which are all available at Dollar General!
My kids are snack hoarders so I typically opt for higher in fat and protein snacks for them like seeds and nuts. Because no nuts are allowed, I grabbed some pumpkin seeds to see how they like them since they are some of my faves!

Dollar General Literacy Foundation
Did you know that 1 in 4 children in America grows up without learning to read and that literacy has direct links to poverty levels?
Literacy has always been something that I’ve been passionate about. In fact, it was reading that was the connection between my husband and I. My household is filled with avid book lovers and this is truly a gift.
But not everyone has access to books or someone to teach them to read. J.L. Turner, the co-founder of Dollar General, was functionally illiterate. He only had a third-grade education when his father died in an accident and he quit school so he could help provide for his family. In 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in his honor so that they could help others better their lives and the lives of their families by providing grants to literacy organizations.
