When we got the notice in March 2020 that outside was canceled because of a new but not really new virus called COVID-19, my husband and I were determined to play it safe to ensure that we didn’t get it. There were so many unknowns at the time–including the survival rate. We didn’t want to risk catching the coronavirus because I’m high risk with asthma. I’ve made over 500 masks, done Shipt and Instacart orders, and removed my kids from contact with everyone else. And you know what?

My family still got COVID-19.

I’m not going to complain about it because we had a mild version of the virus and right now, we’re all pretty much ok besides some sinus and chest congestion. But now we’re sitting with a mix of gratitude and anger because we were SO careful. And COVID-19 still got us.

We Know How We Got COVID-19

But in the greater scheme of things, it’s not important. As COVID-19 continues to mutate and become easier to catch, it was only a matter of time before our family got it too. Our kids were hit with an even more mild version and I’m grateful.

Our Coronavirus Symptoms

My husband and I were exposed on January 1, 2021. We aren’t sure the exact date for the kids but abc had a fever on January 1 that continued to the morning of January 2. BC also had a little fever on January 2 that lasted a couple hours. Mini was coughing and sneezing from January 1 thru January 4. We tried to keep everyone separate in their rooms but the only who effectively quarantined was Mini.

And then it hit Denvor and I. On January 6th, he started getting congested and feeling loopy. On the evening of January 7th, I felt like I was hit with a ton of bricks. My chest was heavy and I just couldn’t quite move. And then on the 8th when I woke up, I just knew that COVID-19 had officially hit our house. My body was in so much pain and my chest just felt so heavy. From there, it just got worse. But then I shared on my Instagram stories that I was exposed to coronavirus and was pretty sure I had it. My longtime friend shared that her little brother had it and a concierge nurse had come to give him an IV that gave his health a 180.

As soon as she sent the information over, I contacted the nurse. She came that day and gave us an IV that had the following:

  • electrolytes
  • Pepcid AC
  • Zofran
  • pain reliever
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin C
  • steriod
  • Zinc

And then she gave us a shot in our hips of Vitamin D. Before she left, both of us felt energized and pain-free. It was incredible.

Our COVID-19 Timeline

Since March 2020, my family has been practicing safe distancing, staying home and wearing masks. But somehow, we still got COVID-19.

I Value My Health So Much More Right Now

Surviving COVID-19 unscathed has me feeling so grateful right now. As an asthmatic, my biggest fear was dying as a result of the coronavirus. Making it through this experience has me really appreciating life right now but it also has me questioning so much as well. Like how could people think this isn’t real? I’ve had both the flu and strep throat at the same time and it still wasn’t as bad as I felt having this virus. Having my health restored is one of the most incredible feelings. Being able to smell and taste foods again is amazing.

But I’m also really mad too.

It’s really hard to be depriving my kids of experiences, adventures, and investments in our mental and emotional health away from home because we didn’t want to catch this virus THAT WE CAUGHT ANYWAY while watching people go to parties and things while being healthy. I’m letting these feelings go but it definitely makes me think differently about only being home.

I’ll be sharing more about our experience with COVID-19, like supplements we took, how to help others who have it and more.

Have you had COVID-19 before? What was your experience like?
