Ok, so that’s not part of the book but it seemed to flow so well!
Mini and abc are AVID readers so when we were contacted about reviewing this book, my arms were out like “Gimme! Gimme!” Though I was excited about the book, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Let me preface this by saying that I have two of the most girliest girls in the world. Our all time favorite book is “Shoe-La-La”. Not only does it have great rhyme to it, but it has so much more dimension to it than you would think by it’s name.
And the same is true about “Mary Had a Little Glam”
Representation Matters
We live in a predominantly white area. Mini was the only little black girl in her class last year. We’ve dealt with the issues of not loving her beautiful brown skin to her hating her curls and one of the things that has helped us in handling this is making sure that mini sees little girls that look like her in books, dolls, and shows we watch.

Mary is a little brown girl that is a glamorous little girl. She still has her little lamb but it’s rocked as a furry purse and naturally, every where that Mary goes her purse is sure to follow. I love how the author, Tammi Sauer, and the illustrator, Vanessa Brantley-Newton, tied in bits and pieces of the original story. But Mary was FAB-U-LOUS in this book! Outside of being incredibly cute and glam, I loved how secure with herself she was and how she loved making her friends feel good about themselves as well.
As a mom to little girls, this is such an important lesson. This day and age bullying is so big and breaking each other down with snarky remarks and mean spirited taunts are so harmful it’s really refreshing to see a book that highlights sharing the beauty of each other. In the book, Mary jazzed everyone up and made them feel good about the things THEY were good at.
Our Favorite Part
The plot twists at the end and I love it! What’s the point in being a girlie girl if you don’t know how to get a little dirty too? This book had a great main character that I could feel good about my girls emulating. The rhyming and prose was perfect and it had a good reading rhythm to it which is really important for abc’s age. It was relevant to where mini is in life and development so I loved that.
