  • Increased sugar levels in your blood
  • Manages how your body uses things like fats, proteins, carbohydrates
  • Regulates your blood pressure
  • Can keep your inflammation in your body down
  • Associated with your fight, flight, or freeze responses

When your body is in a constant state of stress, it triggers the adrenal glands to consistently produce cortisol, not giving your body a break. If you have too much cortisol, it can cause weight gain, anxiety, depression, and trouble sleeping. Conversely, if you don’t have enough, you can have low blood pressure, loss of appetite, and being tired all the time.

Adrenal fatigue is basically your body being like, “hey dammit, I’m tired of being stressed all the time and I need a break.

Symptoms

As with anything, how a condition affects your body varies from person to person. Some of the common symptoms look like this though:

  • chronic fatigue
  • body aches
  • low blood pressure
  • weight loss (not my symptom)
  • hair loss
  • anxiety
  • depression

After having tests run on my cortisol levels, I found out that at about 1 pm, mine tanked. Which made perfect sense to me because I became sluggish and just felt like moving or thinking was just too much. The best way to find out if you’re struggling with adrenal fatigue is to see your doctor and have some tests run on both your blood and your urine.

Holistic Treatment for Adrenal Fatigue

When I was talking to Athena about the best way to combat this, I thought it was in vain and would take medicines and other things. Here’s the thing: this is controllable at home and you can very much so manage it with what you put in your body and how you move it.

Foods to Avoid:

  • processed foods
  • white foods (sugar, rice, flour, etc)
  • soda
  • caffeine
  • fried foods
  • alcohol
  • artificial sweeteners
  • fast foods

Foods to Include:

  • eat the rainbow in fruits and veggies
  • fish (omega-3 baby!)
  • whole grains
  • healthy fats
  • lots of water
  • nuts
  • beans
  • legumes
  • minimally processed foods
  • lean proteins

Food is medicine, friends. For Lent I went vegan and as I incorporated more and more plant-based, minimally processed foods into my diet, my energy sky rocketed.

In Addition To Adjusting Your Diet, Do These 3 Things:

Start your day off with breakfast. Yes, I know that things like intermittent fasting are really popular right now. But this is only if it’s good for your health. Having a balanced meal (protein, carbs, fats) first thing in the morning and then making sure that you eat regularly throughout the day allows your body to have a steady stream of nutrients stored up and helps to maintain cortisol levels through the day.

Exercise. It makes a difference. Athena told me to take a walk around 2 pm daily to help combat the dip in my cortisol levels. As you move your body, your adrenaline levels increase giving your energy.
